Churchgate Chowk Renamed to Honour Late Vinod Shekhar

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) named the chowk between Eros Theatre, Ritz Hotel, and Astoria Hotel, next to the new Metro Station at Churchgate, in memory of Late Vinod Shekhar, former Municipal Corporator of Colaba.
The naming ceremony took place on Sunday, 6 October 2024, and was attended by Members of Parliament Milind Deora and Varsha Gaikwad and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar.

Vinod Shekhar was elected twice as Municipal Corporator from Colaba and served as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation. He had dedicated his life to serving the people of South Mumbai and was also the spokesperson of the Indian National Congress party.
Mr. Shekhar, along with his mother, the Late Annie Shekhar, former MLA of Colaba, was known for numerous public interest initiatives.

Among their significant contributions was the establishment of study centres for underprivileged students in South Mumbai, which helped many to become professionals and embark on successful careers.
They had also played a pivotal role in initiating bus services to previously inaccessible areas, improving daily commutes for locals. Additionally, they had provided water and sanitation facilities and offered scholarships to needy students, leaving behind a legacy of public service.
